Ancient Rome is the civilization that developed from the city of Rome and became one of the most powerful states of the ancient Mediterranean world. It traditionally began with the founding of Rome in the 8th century BC and developed through the Roman Kingdom, Roman Republic, and Roman Empire.

Ancient Rome is known for its contributions to law, government, engineering, architecture, literature, and language. Roman institutions and culture had a lasting influence on Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
