Ancient Greek is the form of the Greek language spoken and written in ancient Greece and the wider Greek world from antiquity through the early centuries of the Byzantine Empire. It includes several regional Greek dialects, such as Attic Greek, Ionic Greek, Doric Greek, and Aeolic Greek.
Ancient Greek was the language of many influential works of literature, philosophy, history, and science, including the writings of Homer, Plato, Aristotle, and Herodotus. It also served as the language of much of the New Testament and other early Christian writings.
