===Final period of use===
Beginning in the later half of the 1st millennium BC cuneiform rapidly fell into dis-use. In part this was due to the slow replacement of the [[Akkadian language]] by the [[Aramaic language|Aramaic]], written in the [[Aramaic alphabet]], in Mesopotamia and the growing influence of the Persian
and Greek languages in the region. There is one example of Eastern Aramaic being written in syllabic cuneiform, the "Uruk incantation" (c. 300 BC), now in the Louvre museum.
